INTRODUCTION
The report for 2020, which represents the twenty-eighth edition, supplies a broad picture of the competitive position of the banks oper- ating in Italy, through the examination of numerous sets of data refer- ring to human resources, their management, and their cost.
The report is divided into three parts, the first of which: describes the trend of employment in Italy and Europe; supplies information about the characteristics of the sector’s personnel in Italy and the cost thereof; and offers an international comparison that allows for summa- rizing the differences and distance that separate Italy from other com- petitors. The second part examines the regulatory profiles of the Italian labour market and contains critical information about the most recent national collective bargaining contracts signed by the Italian Banking Association; it also reviews the trend of second-level contracting. The third part is dedicated to an analysis of the restructuring and organiza- tional changes, as reported by European banks.
Chapter 1 contains an analysis of employment in Europe and Italy, and an in-depth look at the Italian banking sector, with a focus on the difference by gender.
Chapter 2 analyses the trends of wages and personnel costs in Italian banks.
Chapter 3 examines the relationship between labour and external competitiveness for a sample of Italian banking groups, which are mea- sured against comparable institutions in the main European countries.
Chapter 4 provides a comparison of wages and labour costs between Italian and European banks for several job positions in the sec- tor, including non-managerial, managerial and executive positions.
Chapter 5 examines the various provisions that impacted the gov- ernance of employment and social-welfare relationships in 2020. In view of the extraordinary situation prompted by the spread of COVID-
